Saline Breast Implants
Saline-filled implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water (saline). They are inserted empty, and then filled with saline once in place. Breast augmentation using saline breast implants are available to women 18 years old and older and to women of any age for breast reconstruction.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel. Compared to saline breast implants, silicone gel feels a bit more like natural breast tissue. With silicone gel breast implants, you may need to visit your Lakewood Ranch plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the gels are not leaking and the breast implants are functioning properly. An ultrasound or MRI screening can assess the condition of breast implants. Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for breast augmentation in women ages 22 or older.
Form-Stable Breast Implants
Form-stable breast implants, also referred to as gummy bear breast implants, maintain their shape even when the implant shell is broken. The consistency of the silicone gel inside the implants are thicker and firmer compared to traditional silicone gel breast implants and are thought to be less likely to break. Gummy bear breast implants are not round, but rather shaped with more projection at the bottom and tapered on the top. If a shaped implant moves or rotates, it may lead to an unusual appearance of the breast. Form-stable breast implants require longer incisions in the skin.
